Ready, Set, Launch!
In 2021, Fisker embarked on an ambitious journey to bring emotional, sustainable, and future forward electric vehicles to market within two years.
I was the UX Design Director, leading a team that launched a clean-sheet design of the car’s infotainment system. I also spearheaded Fisker's safety and driver assistance (ADAS) feature experience.
Our Mission.
Design a car's HMI that is easy to understand and use. A system that focuses on reducing driver distraction with the flexibility to engage its users through connected services when parked.
The Approach.
We achieved a better user experience by first simplifying feature user flows. A 'place for everything' approach that used a single app window and location of common controls within easy reach that aided muscle memory. Utilizing simple language phrasing to describe features, combined with visual cues like larger buttons and reduced color pallete helped ease of use.
The Product.
Impact.
Our biggest win has been elevating design metrics to be as important as engineering and business metrics. Most importantly, our customers won, with a user experience that is easy to use and understand, while reducing driving distraction. Throughout our iterative process, it was a journey of steady progress.
As Fisker releases more features throughout the product life cycle with its over-the-air updates, there will be a need to be dilligent as we were with the v1 of the product through constant design reviews, frequent iteration and rigorous testing to continue on our mission.
What's Next?
Good design is an ongoing battle. Upon reflection, we still have much to do. With v2, added features and new services will add more complexity. With hopes of incorporating intelligence and predictive behavior anticipating users' needs will help ease the need for frequent interaction, and to that end, we have charted our course for what's next.
