Overview
Skull & Bones is a video title by Ubisoft. The game revolves around piracy and naval warfare with a fantastical setting in East Africa and Southeast Asia during the late 17th century, the peak of the historical Golden Age of Piracy. In 2019, Ubisoft asked Imaginary Forces to create not only the logo for the game, but also the overall strategy for the brand and it's marketing. I worked with Karin Fong to create its identity and assist with the branding strategy.
Research
Through the 16th-18th centuries, a handful of trading companies ruled most of the ship routes for trade in the world giving rise to the golden era of piracy. Skull and Bones was more than a pirate game. Our strategy was to position the pirates who saw themselves as entrepreneurs of the seas. We wanted to create a monogram for the Skull and Bones franchise much like that of the East India Company or the VOC.
Our research revealed through old shipping maps, painting and illustration styles, coins and other printed material that large serif letterforms and simple shapes defined how monograms were designed in order to be able to be cast as trading coins.
