Overview
Electronic Arts was developing a new chapter in their Need4Speed video game franchise, Need4Speed: Terror 5 (Need4Speed 10). They called on Digital Kitchen's Los Angeles studio to design the in-game user interface for the game and supporting menu screens and overall aesthetic for the interface. Terror 5 aimed to merge racing and terrorism hacking adventure. Set in an euro city, the game was designed for a large-scale street racing experience, reflecting the cultural fascination with hackers and cybersecurity. To reflect the game concept, we developed an interface design that revealed the mechanics with a cybernetic aesthetic.
The internet is a wealth of information. Simple Google searches for “how to jam mobile phone signals” or “easy bluejacking” results in methods to rig easy to find hardware into crude but sophisticated pieces of technology. This “frankentek” helps this society of street racers avoid surveillance and counteract the efforts of the police.
